Since surgery I have been fortunate to have someone by my side at every hour of the day. Derek even had yesterday off. Well, I woke up this morning and I was all alone. Just me. At first I thought this is going to be interesting… but I can do it.

First task: Emptying my drain. Ouch. I am certain I pulled my drain out and popped a stitch. It takes Derek a few minutes to empty my drain. It took me 10 and I had to do it a few times to even get it right.

Second task: Shower. Getting all my clothes off was the first challenge. I don’t have complete range of motion of my arms so putting things over my head is quite challenging. But I did it very slowly. I pinned my drain to a ribbon around my neck and jumped in the shower. Once the shower was over it was time to dry off. There are lots of parts I can’t reach. At one point I was standing in the mirror laughing at myself trying to reach my legs to dry them off. I gave up and just put my clothes on while parts of me were still dripping wet.

Third task: Breakfast. I couldn’t reach the coffee cups no matter how hard I tried. So I had to opt for water instead. What would ordinarily take me one trip back to my room took me at least six. Derek or my mother in law have been making my breakfast, coffee and Gatorade/miralax mix and bringing to me in bed every day. (Spoiled right?) I had to do it myself this morning and I literally had to stop to catch my breath. It made me realize how weak I really am.

Fourth task: Laundry. I wanted to start a new load of laundry but I couldn’t pick up the laundry basket. So I pushed it with my feet. Like a soccer ball.

Fifth task: Making the bed. hahaha I can’t tell you how ridiculous I looked doing this. At one point I used my teeth to help me pull the sheet up. I was determined. I wore myself out so bad I just left the decorative pillows on the floor. I will put them on when I get another serge of energy.

I somehow managed to get my computer set up. I wasn’t sure how I was going to pick up the computer but I managed. It took me three hours to do the five task above. It should have taken me 30 minutes. I need a nap….

I have a doctors appointment with my oncologist at 2:40 today. More to come after that…

Sore and exhausted,

I had to laugh because this all brought back some funny memories for me. I had my family visit from out of town two weeks after my surgery and I thought I would make some hamburgers, warning!!! do not make hamburgers. When you press your hands together your muscles in your chest move, OMG that was an awakening! WTF Ouch is all I can say, I never had any problems with my drains and had them in for three weeks. My sister made me a contraption that tied around my waste and had two little pouches for all 4!!! of my drains it worked great in the shower. Good luck getting stronger and stronger. Wait till you vacuum the first time…!
